Momus Emerging Critics Residency 2019

Casey Beal, formerly the Senior Editor of Momus, is a freelance writer and editor based on Vancouver Island. He studied at the Center for the Study of Theory and Criticism at the University of Western Ontario, and was recently the inaugural artist-in-residence at Forest City Gallery in London, Ontario.

Sky Goodden is the founding publisher of Momus, an online platform for art writing and criticism; and co-host of Momus: The Podcast. Goodden has published in numerous catalogues, art books, and publications including Momus, Frieze, Art in America, C Magazine, and Art21, among others. She is based in Montreal.

Mark Mann is a writer and editor who specializes in longform narrative journalism. He has written feature stories for Toronto Life, The Walrus, Report on Business, Reader’s Digest, The Dance Current, Torontoist, Broadview and Maisonneuve, as well as essays about art and culture for Momus, The Toronto Star, and others. His writing about science and tech has appeared extensively on Motherboard. He has been shortlisted twice for the National Magazine Award. Mann is Associate Editor in Chief at Beside.

Merray Michael Mina is an Egyptian essayist, editor, and writing teacher based in New York. While studying art history at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, she co-founded and edited CRIT, a free biannual print-only criticism publication. From 2016 to 2019, she held various editorial positions at Canadian Art. She was the inaugural 2019-2020 editorial fellow at C Magazine, where she conceptualized and edited three themed print issues addressing facets of systemic change in the art world. She recently completed her MFA in narrative nonfiction at New York University. She was an Associate Editor at Momus.

Saelan Twerdy is a writer, editor, and cultural worker living in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. He is currently the Managing Editor of RACAR, the official journal of the Universities Art Association of Canada (UAAC), and is pursuing an MLIS degree at McGill University.

Joni Cheung, aka Snack Witch, is Canadian-born Hong Kong-Chinese interdisciplinary artist and writer based on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, Stó:lō, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh and Kanien’kehá:ka peoples.

Emily Critch is a Mi’kmaw and settler curator, artist, and writer from Elmastukwek, Ktaqmkuk Territory (Bay of Islands, NL). Her recent curatorial projects include these are our monuments (2021) with the Owen’s Art Gallery, mitsujuk | kussikuashu | kpitni’sewet | they sew with the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador (2019-20), and Visiting: Logan MacDonald at Grenfell Art Gallery (2018). Critch has published exhibition texts, reviews, and essays with several venues including Eastern Edge, The Rooms, Eyelevel, and Visual Arts News. Emily is currently based in St. John’s, NL working remotely as the Program Coordinator with the Indigenous Curatorial Collective/Collectif des commissaires autochtones, and the Adjunct Curator at the Owens Art Gallery. 

Elliott Elliott is an artist based in Montreal.

Ruth Ezra is a historian of art and science who specializes in the material and visual culture of early modern northern Europe.

Tao Fei is a transdisciplinary cultural worker with over 15 years experience as a producer, arts manager, researcher and writer.

Anj Fermor is an artist and writer residing in Calgary, Alberta on Treaty 7 Territory.

Darshita Rajanikant Jain is a New Arts Journalism grad student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and literary editor for F News Magazine.

Dustin Sean Lowman is a writer and musician based in New York.

Sarah Nesbitt is a visual artist who works with photography and multimedia.

Juilee Raje is a writer and editor from Tiohtiá:ke/ Montréal. She has publishing work in Peripheral Review and Femme Art Review, and has contributed editorial support to Carnation Vol. 2 and Public Parking.
