    Momus Critical Writing Fellowship 2021-2022

    The 2021-2022 Momus Critical Writing Fellowship was awarded to Arushi Vats, whose long-form feature “Evidence of Things Seen*: Capture and Control in India” examines contemporary artistic engagement with surveillance and biometric data collection in India, revealing how technologies of identification shape visibility, citizenship, and state control.

    The shortlisted fellows were Simon Wu and Eugene Yiu Nam Cheung. Wu’s commissioned text “On Whiteness” reflects on his collaboration with Claudia Rankine and The Racial Imaginary Institute to make visible whiteness as a racial and cultural construct within art and its institutions.

    Mentorship and editorial support were provided by Rahel Aima, Nora N. Khan, and Jessica Lynne.

    About the Faculty

    Rahel Aima

    Rahel Aima is a writer based in Dubai. She was an associate editor and remains a frequent contributor to Momus, and her writing has appeared in or at 4 Columns, Artforum, Art in America, Artnews, ArtReview, The Atlantic, Bidoun, Bookforum, e-flux architecture, Frieze, Garage, Harper’s Bazaar Art Arabia, Mousse, New Republic, Real Life, Rest of World, Tank, Vogue Arabia, and World Policy Journal, among many others. Aima regularly contribute exhibition texts, catalogue essays, and book chapters.

    Arushi Vats

    Arushi Vats is a writer based in New Delhi, India. She is the associate editor for Fiction at Alternative South Asia Photography, and the recipient of the Momus / Eyebeam Critical Writing Fellowship 2021, and the Art Scribes Award 2021. She has conducted workshops on writing for Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, Khoj International Artists Association, and Art Chain India. Her curatorial projects have focused on conceptions of image and power, and histories of resistance in Southeast Asia.

    Simon Wu

    Simon Wu is a writer and curator involved in collaborative art production. He is a PhD student at Yale University and his essay collection, Dancing On My Own (Harper Collins), was published in June 2024.
