The 2023-2024 Momus Critical Writing Fellowship was awarded to Kira Xonorika, whose long-form feature “Do You Believe in Aliens?: Re-Indigenizing the Algorithmic Tropes of Intelligence” discusses how art practices from Indigenous perspectives challenge Western ideas of intelligence, technology, and the human/nonhuman divide.
The shortlisted fellows were Cassie Packard and Doreen A. Rios.
Packard’s commission text “Tracking the Sapphic Social Imaginaries: Lesbian Art in Print” examines how three generations of lesbian- and feminist-run art magazines shaped and circulated visual culture to expand lesbian artistic identity and community.
Rios’s commissioned text “Dataspace: From the Observed Object to the Participating Subject” reflects on how the 2005 exhibition Dataspace, curated by Príamo Lozada, used interactive, technology-based artworks to shift emphasis from art as a static object to reflect broader dialogues around art, technology, and audience engagement.
Mentorship and editorial support were provided by Rahel Aima and Jessica Lynne.
